Homework and Online Learning

At Irlam and Cadishead Academy, we believe that independent learning encourages the development of personal skills and allows students to take more ownership of their education.

There are three types of tasks that you could receive:   

  • Online homework: In Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) and Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11), homework in maths, English, science and French will be set online. Students have a week to complete this homework.  
  • Paper based homework:  In Years 10 and 11, students may receive tasks that are paper based. This gives pupils the opportunity to practice questions that are more similar to exam style questions and allows students to consolidate and extend their learning.  
  • Homework projects:  In Years 7, 8 and 9, pupils are set a homework project each term that focuses on subjects outside the core subjects. Pupils have the whole term to complete this project. The projects this year are: 

How many homework tasks will I receive?

Students receive one piece of homework from each of maths, English and science once a week. 

The independent study timetable is below. It shows what night each subject is set on, and also the day it is due in:

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 to 9) 

  • Students is KS3 should spend approximately 30-40 minutes on each piece of homework set. 
  • KS3 pupils will also complete a homework project once a term.  

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 to 11) 

  • Students in KS4 should spend approximately 1 hour on each piece of homework set. 
  • KS4 pupils will receive homework from their option subjects once a fortnight. 

What additional help is available for study? 

  • The library is open at lunchtime on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and after school every day from 15:00 – 16:00 for pupils to complete homework. 
  • Sparx Maths club is on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during lunchtime in the maths area, where you can receive support from a maths teacher.    
  • Sparx Science club is after school on Tuesday from 15:00.  You can receive support from a science teacher. 
  • Sparx Reader club is after school on Wednesday from 15:00.  You can receive support from an English teacher.
