Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE)

At Irlam & Cadishead Academy, we teach Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education (PSHCE) as a whole-school approach to underpin students’ development as people because we believe that this supports their learning capacity.

We have incorporated Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHCE, to provide a programme that offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through Scheme of Work bringing consistency and progression to our students’ learning in this vital curriculum area.

This also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda, and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our young people.

Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE)

At Irlam & Cadishead Academy, we prioritize PSHCE as a cornerstone for student development. It fosters self-understanding, and respect and empowers students with the voice and skills they need to navigate life and learning.

Our PSHCE curriculum seamlessly integrates the statutory RSE program. To ensure a structured and progressively-developed curriculum we utilise Jigsaw as our primary teaching and learning framework. This programme is carefully tailored to address the specific needs of our student body.

For your reference, a mapping document titled "Jigsaw 11-16 and statutory RSE and Health Education" details exactly how Jigsaw, and consequently our school's programme, fulfils all mandatory RSE and Health Education requirements a copy of which can be provided on request.  Furthermore, Jigsaw's commitment to regular updates ensures we consistently utilize the most up-to-date teaching materials, guaranteeing well-equipped and knowledgeable educators.

Citizenship

At Irlam & Cadishead Academy, we go beyond academics. We equip our students with the knowledge and skills to become active and responsible members of society. Our Citizenship curriculum focuses on the core principles that underpin a democratic and inclusive Britain.

Through their studies, students will develop a deep understanding of:

  • The democratic process: Students will explore how citizens can influence decision-making, empowering them to engage with their communities
  • The rule of law: They will learn how laws protect individuals and are essential for a safe and thriving society.
  • Separation of powers: Students will gain insight into the distinct roles of the executive and judiciary, fostering a sense of civic responsibility.
  • Religious freedom: Our curriculum emphasizes the importance of respecting diverse faiths and beliefs, promoting tolerance and understanding.
  • Equality and non-discrimination: Students will develop critical skills to identify and challenge discrimination, fostering a more inclusive society.

Our dedicated staff employ a neutral and objective approach, ensuring students receive a balanced and comprehensive understanding of the essential British values. We believe this knowledge will empower them to be responsible, engaged citizens who contribute positively to their communities and the world.
